Ran into another little problem....

I was brush cutting today on my Jinma 354 and my RPM gauge slowly started dropping out. It fell down to about 600, stayed there for about a minute, then slowly fell to 0. My hour meter stopped clicking off time too. I lost no power, only the use of the 2 gauges. I checked all the connections behind the instrument panel, and checked all the fuses. I can't seem to locate what might be the problem. Any ideas??

The tach sending unit is screwed into the bell housing. It may have vibrated loose and gotten too far away from the flywheel. If so, remove it and inspect the tip for damage. If none, screw it back in till you feel it hit the flywheel. Then back it out about 1/2 turn and lock it back down

Gonna go and check that as soon as I get home. What should the end of the sending unit look like that makes contact with the flywheel?

Mine is flat, and sorta filled flush to the end with a stiff silicone kind of material. Odds are that the silicone stuff is suspending the actual sensor device in position near the tip. Maintaining the correct gap between tip and flywheel is critical. Too close, the sensor can be damaged or destroyed. Too far away, it can't generate a usable signal for the tach.

Something important -- it doesn't actually make contact with the flywheel. With the engine off, screw it in until it makes contact and then back it off less than one turn. If the sensor makes contact with the flywheel when the engine is running the sensor will be destroyed.

that was exactly what the problem was! I pulled it out, cleaned it (it actually looked like it had a little bit of carbon on it), put it back in, fired the tractor up, and works like it's supposed to. I did notice that as soon as it turned over, there was a good bit more smoke that cme out the exhaust....actually looked white.....is that because I had the sensor out?
Also, where can I get one of these sensors to have as a spare?

The white smoke had nothing to do with the sensor, you probably just had some condensation in the exhaust system. I may have an extra sensor, but no promises. Give me a few days to get around to check my spare parts shelves.
