Satoh Bison S650G
I ran my Bison out of gas and can't get it running right again. I was able to limp it back to the barn. Replaced fuel filter put in new gas got it running but would die when I lifted up the bushhog and put it under a load. Then I pulled carb and cleaned it, replaced the condensers and it seemed to run fine for about 10 minutes then it died and I can't get it started again. I had left the key on when I first tan out of gas and read that will burn up the points, but since it seemed to be running fine for 10 straight I figured that couldn't be it. Any advice? Thanks.

Welcome to TBN.:tractor: Check your gas tank for blockage at the shut off valve.

Sounds like something still in the carb or fuel line.

I would check it for a good strong spark from the coil wire to ground. Wire pulled from the distributor and held about 3/8 to 1/2 inch away from some clean metal. Hold the wire with insulated handle pliers. And crank the engine over.
Another thought is theres a screen for the fuel inlet needle. It's in the top of the carb where the 12mm bolt
head holds the fuel line banjo fitting on. Lift that fitting off theres a screen under there.
Good Luck

we have a 656 Farmal that we ran out of gas, we put gas in it right away but when we went to start it it wouldn't. We check the plugs, points, condenser, everything leading up to the carborator... all seem to be working fine. It will turn over but will not fire... it's like it's not getting gas. BUT the carborator fills up with gas to the point when you take out the little solenoid needle ... gas runs out. What do we need to do next... yes we even tried a limited amount of ether in the air breather... don't like to use too much...Help.

Did the engine try to fire with the Ether squirt?
If it did it's a fuel issue and the jets in the bottom of the float bowl may have crud in them.
If it didnt its now a ignition issue.
Sometimes pulling the choke on full and cranking will suck the cooties through. But the Idle jet has about a .005 oriface so they plug easy with any grit. The bottom of old tractor fuel tanks isn't the cleanest place.

Thanks for the quick reply. No it did not fire w/the ether. That's why we're frustrated.. SO we are on the right track... where is this idel jet exactly? We are going to try taking the carb off and checking it since to are getting fuel down to it ..... and checking the screen behind the solenoid. Do you think this would work?

No fire with ether leans me towards ignition like no spark.
What i would try is remove the rubber air duct from the carb to the air cleaner.
Add a small amount of fuel down the carb throat and try starting. Only a small amount a teaspoon or so.
It should try to start. That tells us the plugs are firing and we need to dig into the fuel system. Even though it ran out of gas and thats the most likely thing we can't assume anything. First step in a no start diaginsos is to determine whats lacking. Spark,Fuel,Compression or Timing any of the above can cause a no start. By checking this way we waste no time or money on items that are ok.

Hi Lee; FINALLY got our 656 running like a champ. After going over everything one more time.. we even tore apart the carborator and cleaned it. Still wouldn't run... with ether even. So today.. we were trying to contact the repair men at the implement dealership... they told us to replace the plugs and points. BUT while getting ready to do that noticed a wire under the footplate hanging down...it was in a position that with very little effort it would get under the clutch pedal. Yep... cleaned it up... put it together with a little electrical tape and the tractor fired right up. It was one of the wires from the distributor to the starter! Darn wire had been patched once.. and it was in a position that unless you were under the loader looking straight up... you wouldn't have seen it. IF we hadn't dropped the spark plug socket... we still would be scratching our heads. It can be the most simple thing that causes problems.... thank heavens!! Thanks for your help though. Deb
