rally mower giving problems

I have a 1994 model rally garden tractor that has always been really dependable until lately. Its latest problem is it will run fine on level ground or going down hill. But when you start up hill it will act like it floods itself out and quits. i have to roll it backwards to put it on level ground for it to crank. Any ideas what it may be? The engine is a 18h vtwin briggs industrial commercial.

Hey UpTaker,

Have you checked the

1. Fuel Filter, should be replaced if it is older than a year or 2.

2. fuel hose for kinks.

3. Air Filter, if dirty clean or replace.

4. Gas Cap to see if the vent is clogged.

5. Spark Plug, replace once a year.

Try these things and then let us know,

Uptaker, Along with the previous mentioned service checks, I would also have to check float level which is in the carbureator's bowl or it could be the viton needle and seat if it is positioned toward the rear of the engine .

It seems when you go up hill only ,if the fuel is running to the back of the bowl going past the needle and seat it could be causing the flood condition .

Does this mower have a thumb screw at the bottom of the bowl? or is it a spring loaded push button drain.?

Don't you just hate when these little buggers give you greif? /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

All of the regular maintenance issues are ok new plugs, filters and so on. I will look tomorrow and check for the screw on the bowl. Will post what I find. Thanks for all the help so far.

does the starter turn over after it has stopped? or will the engine just not start?
