I left my M 6800 outside for several months. When I tried to crank it last week, it was hard to start, and just would not fire up. Finally when it did, it blew sooty water out the pipe and all over the hood (and me) Now it runs fine. I guess I need to cover the exhaust with something when I do leave it outside, or install some kind of closure.

What do you guys do, and besides rusting the exhaust system, what damage will this cause? Where does this water end up in the system or engine?

If it sets too long like that, it can corrode the rings to the cylinder walls...what a mess then!:(

Like Ga Kub said, I put one of those rain caps on my B7100. A can on the exhaust works, if you don't forget to put it on and/or the wind doesn't blow it off. Some folks don't like the rattle from the rain cap, but that never bothered me.

I remember growing up seeing my grandpa put 5 gallon pails over the exhaust on his farm tractors and his standalone power baler had a washbin over it.

I'd say use whatever you have laying around to act as a raincover.

The only problem with using those other things is if you forget to put something on the exhaust, and it rains that night. You can't forget that rain cap that stays on all the time.:D In fact, I kept my tractors indoors in my shop building, so really didn't need anything. However, occasionally the tractor stayed overnight a day or two at my brother's place, so I didn't want to take any chances of rain going down the exhaust.:)

A right angle elbow on the top of the exhaust works pretty good especially if you cut it off at a 45 degree angle to keep water from blowing in, don't have to listen to the rain cap clatter that way.
