Not sure where to post this, they are adding a new rail spur to this dock.
------------------------------------------------
An aerial update on the rebirth of this C. Reiss dock in Superior to replace their facility in West Duluth. A rail spur will be along the east (right) side of the dock while ships will unload in a shared slip with Envirotech-Hallett Dock 8 on the west side (left). Superior, WI - November 12, 2023

I went down the rabbithole, followed each link in the railfan articles.

Only 2 ft 6 inch gauge!

Looks like the cause was resuming occasional tourist service on trackage that was essentially abandoned long ago with no maintenance since.

There are more photos on Facebook, no subscription needed.

Added - the Facebook link worked on my PC, doesn't work on my phone.

Big government over reaching again! (zero maintenance? no inspections?)

Or maybe a payoff to look the other way on deferred maintenance.

Another first in the nation in that California had won in Federal court approval to enact rules requiring railroads to reduce and eliminate locomotive air pollution…

Zero emission locomotives for passenger and industrial engines built after 2030

Any polluting locomotive 23 years and older will not be allowed in the state after 2030.

Guess I need to make it a point to see Big Boy next year on its California leg.

Wonder about all the historic steam engines?
California has the strictest pollution controls in the US and then allows forest fires to put 10X the pollution into the air than all the cars, trucks, trains & lawn mowers combined. Penny wise, pound foolish.

Yeah but the forest fires are often on federal land, over 50% of California forest land is federal. Get Congress to budget more money for fire-alleviation efforts!

I think nearly all the major fires here started, and grew, on Federal land.
