"I once went camping in North Wales with my father. We found a campsite and asked the owner for a spot. He said sure and pointed us to an empty treeline area, far from all of the other vans and tents. It seemed ideal, so we set up next to the trees.

Early the next morning we were woken up by what sounded like a jumbo jet coming through the tent. Incredibly loud. It turned out the site owner had directed us to set up our tent 10 feet from a high speed rail line. The 6am intercity train was going past at 120mph, nearly ripping our tent off the ground."

A Safety Reminder!

As a Steam Club member and rail fan, you're more aware ofthe dangers associated with train operations than your typical neighborwho may be trackside for the first time. Because of your knowledge,we're asking you to have the courage to tell someone if what they'redoing is unsafe – whether they're standing on or within 25 feet of thetracks, placing anything on the railroad's right-of-way, running alongthe ballast or climbing on equipment.

You can help us and the UP Steam program by spreading amessage of safety or by reporting unsafe behavior.

That's all for now. Until next time, stay safe!

Minnesota Dept of Transposition

A new passenger train connecting the Twin Cities to Chicago will begin rolling in 2024. The train will provide a second round-trip each day between St. Paul, Milwaukee, and Chicago, with multiple stops along the way. Is this service something you would use? What amenities would be appealing to you? We want to hear from you! Take our survey and help us better understand what Minnesotans want from a service like this: https://bit.ly/408kkD91699010974086.jpeg

Another first in the nation in that California had won in Federal court approval to enact rules requiring railroads to reduce and eliminate locomotive air pollution…

Zero emission locomotives for passenger and industrial engines built after 2030

Any polluting locomotive 23 years and older will not be allowed in the state after 2030.

Guess I need to make it a point to see Big Boy next year on its California leg.

Wonder about all the historic steam engines?

Simply amazing the garbage coming from that state and then unfortunately a few other states trip all over themselves trying to copy the same garbage and shove it down peoples throats.

Early 20th century excavator on rails, the Erie B was one of several models of steam shovels that could be modified for trench work. Note the spreader bar and shoring used to support the rails.

Went out US33 between Goshen and Elkhart today, and there was a container train setting parked in the west side track. I measured it on my odometer and it was a shade over 2 1/2 miles long. Went to Meijers for a couple of things and when I left, the shortest way home was to cross the tracks, so of course just as I got to the crossing the gates went down and that same train came through. I counted 173 cars with either one or two containers on them. That's a lot of freight.

We seem to want to regulate ourselves out of existence.
Suicide.
