Before you casually handle any wild animal carcase, check out the cost of post-exposure rabies shots. Emergency room at a major hospital - $13k. Yes, that is not a typo. Yes, that is first hand knowledge.

I really didn't want to shoot the bird in front of my granddaughter, so I waited until the next morning and it was gone. .

They (buzzards) also are federally protected and shooting it could have resulted in a big fine. Not sure what they say if it is injured or sick, I guess the best thing would be to call the state wildlife people and see if they will come do something with it....glad it left on its own.

Got the below picture of a coon on the 23rd, thought it was "odd" being out in 100*+. Figured it was the water.

I don't know if it's camera angle or what, but judgeing from feeder behind it that was a good size coon.I've seen bigger but not that common around here. Also seen an albino coon.It either had rabies or got his/her courage from fermented corn mash ! :)

Good reason to leave it be and let the buzzards and maggots to do their jobs :D

That's a fine one. If I've seen bigger, it's not enough to matter. I don't think he's backing down or taking any cr*p from any other raccoons.

First time I've ever had one come at me growling (not trapped) and one of the few I've seen out in the middle of the day. All I had on was a pair of shorts, tennis shoes and my .22 SS I carry, felt a little "vulnerable" with my white bare legs:laughing::laughing:

A few years ago, my wife heard something outside our bedroom on the balcony. Our bedroom is on the third floor with french doors opening onto the balcony. She thought it was the wind blowing an outside window shade. When she opened the door, she screamed and slammed the door closed. "THERE'S A HUGE COON OUT THERE," she screamed. So, when I got over my laughing fit, I went downstairs to the 2nd floor and out onto our raised deck under the balcony. When the coon saw me, it started to jump, but realized how high up it was and decided to take its chances with me instead. I had nothing in my hands, so I kicked the coon in the butt with my bare foot as he came running by. It was huge, maybe 25 lb. I'm glad I live in the country because me standing on the deck in my underwear and kicking that coon had to have been a funny sight.:laughing: The coon must have taken his butt-kickin' to heart because it never returned.:D Our house is rough cedar and our cats also climb up the walls, but this was the only coon we ever had come to visit so high up.

Couple years ago, I went out the basement door to fetch some firewood for the wood furnace. As I was about to gather the wood I glanced over the swimming pool and notice there was a big coon in the shallow end at the waters edge. I grabbed a small log and tossed at the coon to shoo it away - didn't hit it - but it was a VERY BAD IDEA.

The coon, which was maybe 20' away at that point, came tearing up out of the pool and headed directly for me, growling and snarling to beat the band - no back off whatsoever. Certainly smart enough to interpret what I did as a threat.

It happened so quick that I was unable to react fast enough to retreat back inside the basement door, which was only maybe 10' away. So I did the only thing possible to avoid getting seriously chewed up (their canines are about 3/4" to 1" long and can do some real damage) - I picked up about 3" diameter log and whacked it up side the head when it was about 1' away from me. A second whack ended the matter permanently.

While raccoons can be very friendly, they can also be very nasty as far temperament goes - if they feel threatened - they are still wild animals. Couple that with the diseases they can carry (rabies, distemper, and possibly the worst of all: raccoon roundworm) I'd just as soon not have them around.
