Raccoon Captured, Now What ?

I use the kill word too but just didn't want to use it here. I may be city folk but I've spent a lot of time out in the woods. Used to be an avid hunter. but do not have as much time for it now. put down just doesn't sound as bad to some people who may read these posts and are offended by people who kill animals for work or sport. some of those animals where valued as we skinned them and sold the furs to a local mink farmer, not sure what he did with them after.

Think of it as if it was a Very large rat .. with hands .
While I gave up hunting years ago I have no real problems with pest . Especially those that tend to carry rabbies..
Raccoons and possums are on my "dispose of Immediately "list . I see no point in trapping them and then inflicting them on someone else . That leaves only one course of action . I don't find it pleasant , but it is neccessary .
Vermin are Vermin , no matter how "cute " .
Having said that, I leave the Ground hogs, deer ,turkey and black bears alone . The first 'cause they don't come around the house, the ,second, third, and.fourth,'cause I like them .
Basically it's nothing to do with "Macho" or kindness . It's the fact that Racoons and Possum tend to breed a lot . And, they tend to live within a small area . I don't want to sponsor a family of either . The Same might be said of bears , but as we IRISH say "I'll burn that bridge when I come to it " /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

SCIENCE!!! Has the solution!

HELIUM has a lift of 0.84 ounces per cubic foot at sea level

40 Cubic feet of Helium = 33.6 lbs of rascal

Float the FU...rry animal away!
And as an added bonus, at altitudes of 30,000 feet, 200 mph wind velocities can occur.

At those speeds he could be in France by the end of the week. They will then be forced to surrender to him. He will be the first raccoon to rule a nation!

Wash the trap. By submerging it in a barrel or pond. Don't take the critter out until after the trap has been thoroughly washed for at least 15 minutes. Then relocate as needed.

I have to agree. Maybe if you stopped feeding it, it would stop coming around. And after you kill this one (because relocating it may result in it's death anyway), his brother Jethro will probably be coming around for the free food too.

We had a problem with animals coming around for cat's food in bowl. When we got a dog it took care of the four legged varmints. But we still have blue jays that are brave enough to come stealing. I'm trying to think up a cover of chicken wire that will keep them out.

A buddy of mine called me when hisfriend's restaurant had a coon problem. My hunting buddy and I went down there with a live trap and set it next to the storeroom locked to a railing. The next morning one of the employees got there and let it go. These people were not real smart. There was a creek (habitat) behind the restaurant and they insisted on keeping the store room door open and not shutting the dumpster. They wanted us to do a catch and release program, but the game warden told us that was against the law in OHIO. The DNR does not want tto spread rabies stc from one population to another. We set some leg hold traps down by the dumpster the next night and after getting 3 of them, the management of the restaurant decided it was cheaper to close th edumpster and the storeroom door than pay us by the head. Then they paid us in gift certicates, not cash. Kind of cheap those folks, what with all the receipts they were getting day in and day out.
