Rabbit Problem

After emigrating to this country my great Grandparents and their families had rabbit as one of their food staples.:D

On rare occasions, I can remember the Navy serving rabbit on the mess decks.

Our cat was definitely a rabbit hunter (mostly babies), but she died a few years ago as did our dog, and I have noticed an increase in the wild life particularly rabbits, deer, squirrels, chipmunks and mice.

Since we haven't had a garden in a number of years, I enjoy the rabbits, but I empathise with gardeners.

We have a local farmers' market with two butcher shops in it. Both sell rabbbit.

There used to be a sign on a driveway near our current house that said "Rabbits, live or..." :)

As far as a pellet gun goes, my friend used to hunt rabbits out of his second floor window. He'd wait for them to get into his mom's flowers and shoot almost straight down at them. Little chance for unknown backstop at that angle. ;)

David, when I was raising rabbits, I joined the American Rabbit Breeders Association, primarily to get their magazine. Each issue listed the rabbit slaughter houses around the country and what they were currently paying for rabbits. The nearest one to me was in Arkansas. I bought my initial breeding stock locally from some people who sold to kids for their 4-H, FFA, etc. projects and they also sold worms they raised. They said there used to be a place in San Antonio that sent a truck regularly to pick up rabbits for slaughter, but that they closed and never paid for the last shipment. I sold rabbits to individuals, either live or dressed. But I had one German lady (friend of a friend) who asked me to also save the blood that she used in some kind of dish. I declined.:D So she bought live rabbits.

I know lots of people who eat rabbit, some will even run them down with cars if they get a chance. One spring my FIL told the kids that the jack hanging out back was really the easter bunny.
I don't eat rabbit myself but I'm sure I must have had some somewhere over the years.

These are old photos from Australia, that show the reason we needed to control them by introducing a virus.

If you wanted to do something like this in the US, the environmentalists would have them put on the endangered species list, to protect them.

Rabbits were introduced to Australia and released into the wild for hunting purposes. As they don't naturally occur here, the latte sipping enviro-weenies shouldn't have a problem with eradicating them...
