Tire Selection R4 vs Turf

We have looked at the JD x758 and 1023e. We are getting ready to buy a JD 1023E with mid mower and snow plow for the front but can't decide on tires. We are leaning on going with the 1023 because we feel we have more options down the road for other implements. My wife did feel like the 758 was a smoother ride compared to the 1023. Our questions are, would the turf tires on the 1023 provide a significantly smoother ride? Also, would the turf tires provide enough traction for plowing snow? We have a 500+ foot drive, with a grade. Thanks!

Turfs should do fine in snow, maybe a little better than the r4's in some conditions. The turfs will have more biting edges than R4's, look in the snow removal subforum for cutting/grooving r4 tires for more traction. Cant really say about the ride quality, could always run a little less pressure, but its a tractor (kinda) not a Cadillac..

True, but tell my wife that. He first concern was power steering, followed by cup holder and now smoothness of the ride.

I have R4's on my JD 4310 and don't mind the ride! LOL

Drive 2 identical tractors, one with turfs, and the other with r4s, the turfs will ride noticeably better.

Not only ride better (still a tractor with no suspension though!), but much better traction in snow. After having turfs on my current tractor (last one had R-4's), I doubt I'd go for R-4's again.

They both do well in "snow", it is the ice that stops them dead. Then you need chains.

My only experience with turf tires was on my BIL's 750 JD 2 WD tractor that would get stuck on a cow patty if on even a slight incline. 4WD might be better. I cant speak to snow traction on either of them since we rarely get snow.

I suppose the turf tires might ride better if the pressure was lower which should be easy to do with the big turf tires, assuming they are bigger than the R4 tires which they normally are.

The turfs should ride a bit better as they have softer thinner sidewalls. They will do better in snow than the R4's also. The R4's are superior for loader work as the sidewalls are stiffer. There is not one tire that does everything best.. just ain't so such thing.

Wow that's a long driveway for a sub-compact tractor to plow. Your location seems to be in an area where you get a heavy snowfall? Maybe a snow blower would be a better choice?

Wow that's a long driveway for a sub-compact tractor to plow. Your location seems to be in an area where you get a heavy snowfall? Maybe a snow blower would be a better choice?

My dad just bought a x749 with a plow to plow his drive of 500+ft. also. The worst of the snow had to be blown against the wind and a truck was too big to maneuver around. I hope this works as they are getting up in age.

We usually don't get heavy snowfalls like the Cleveland area but occasionally do get dumped on with 10-12 inches. I do have a JD 4310 I haVe used to clear the drive with a rear blade? JD is running a $1500 rebate if you get two implements. I really have no use for any other implements and though the from blade would be nice with the hydraulic angling instead of using the rear blade. I will still keep the 4310 so I can use it for heavy snow. The 1023 will be used primarily for mowing. Thanks for. The feedback.

Mowing.......Turf tires. Loader work or pulling farm implements along with mowing ...R-4. Been there done that.
