Owners manual calls for valves to be adjusted at the 600 hour mark. Thought I would attempt this myself but not sure of the procedure. Specifically, knowing when the cylinder is at TDC. Anyone have any experience with this? Thanks.

You're going to need to relieve the compression on all the cylinders. In a gas engine, this is done by removing the spark plug. On these diesel engines, removing the injectors or glow plugs (depending on whether your injectors are before the intake valve or directly into the cylinder) will work. See images for next steps. They are for my tractor, the XR41xx, but should be similar for your engine. You will have one more cylinder and probably different specs all around. Turning the crank and watching the valves should tell you when you're piston is at TDC.

Tips: Make sure everything is very clean before starting work. You are taking the engine apart, keep things clean. You can use a wood dowel down the glow plug hole or ejector hole to 'see' the piston moving up and down. Remove anything that will interfere with this process, such as belts, covers, hoses, etc. Make sure to label everything, so it all goes back into the same place. This is not a small task, I wish you luck.
