R/F WHEEL LOCK UP

I have a 2430 4 x 4 farm pro. My right front wheel will lock up from time to time. When I notice it sliding (locked) I back up a few feet and it seems to be ok. Any suggestions on what's causing this problem. I'm confused /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif My tractor is just coming on 250 hrs. Thank you Chuck..

Are you in 4x4 when this happens? Eitherway, I think I'd take a look at it before more damage occures.

There's a lot of folks here that can help determine what's going on and get it back together.

You mentioned that it only happens on occasion, and you have a lot of hours on it.

This seems like a warning sign that something needs attention. With that many hours something may be wearing out, There are some very experienced folks here to help in case a dis-assembly/inspection is in order.

When was the last time Front Differential was drained and Lube changed. Even if done recently I would drain it again into a pan that will allow inspection of old fluid. Check to see if it's torally contaminated with glitter (Metal Grindings) as that would mean something needs immediate attention. Check for white paste in the old oil as this could be a sign of water and may lead to rusting parts. If not too contaminated with metal grindings would put fresh lube in there and see how things work. You may get lucky!

It happens when I'm either in two or four wheel drive. The first time is when I was haying my fields last yr, then every once in a while there after. ( maybe 4 times all together) I'm not sure if any one else has had this type of problem. I'm just not sure what's causing it. Other than pulling that wheel assembly apart to find out. Another thing to keep me busy. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I will be giving my tractor a major service before the work season starts up this yr. Not quite 250 hours on it.

Drain and remove the diff cover. It might just be a chunk of something that's jamming the drive gears occasionally. Like items 12 and 13 in THIS PICTURE. If not, you might have to open the right side. Drain is below the hub. Junk may be jamming items 29 or 47 in THIS PICTURE.

Guess I'll be the bad guy here and say it sounds like one of the miter gears has a borken tooth. When it gets out of sync the teeth lockup on each other. You'd have to tear it down and have it look at it anyway as this is not a good sign.

I have to agree with above posts. It does not sound good. Maybe, just maybe if its a piece of "something" wedging between the gears it might not be costly. If you continue using it the way its acting then more damage could occur especially if you force it.
I'd avoid using it until I investigated it more. Its not too big a job to do.

Since it does not do it all the time,I think that something is loose in there,we have seem one of the two bolts that hold the driving gear on loose,I would take it down sooner than later before it mess's up more parts
