I just read through the thread 3 point hitch quick connector..got one?. Can someone provide more details on why "The top hook is useless" and what the "adapter on top" is? So, are there 2 different versions of this TSC Quick Hitch? There was talk about having to modify the 3pt equipment for this adapter to work. What kind of modifications?

I found that the modifications I have had to make are primarily for the top hook, as one has to come in under the top "bolt" or "pin" with the hook. Usually there isn't room on the attachments to do that (mine requires about 5-6 inches), and some re-fabrication is needed to make room for the top hook. See attachment also showing position for conventional top arm pin holes.

I'm not sure what is meant by the "useless" comment, as I find the top hook very useful. I can hook a tow chain on it (pulled the UPS truck out of the ditch, as well as off the ice), throw my logging tongs on that hook, and use it to pull out fence posts.

I agree with Beenthere, I often put the hook back on for the purposes he describes, and it works great. For all of my tools I use the adapter that is supplied with the hitch for the top link. Sure, you have to get off the tractor to hook it up, but thats easy, it was always the lower hitches that were a bear. The quick hitch solves that problem. I recommend it but I have never figured out how to modify my finish mower to work with it, so when I do the lawn, I take the QH off. Very easy. One thing that is not obvious at first, is that you need a set of special adapters for each piece of equipment. These cost at $18.00 per set, not to bad. The Quick Hitch has made my life easier and is worth the $$$. Is it a perfect solution - no.

What exactly is this "adapter"? Any pictures? Thanks.

The adapters are round sleeves to enlarge the size of lower link pins.
The special sleeves have a larger dia. where the linch pin goes
and a rollpin to hold these on.
The quick hitch has cat.II or a hair larger and will be sloppy if u don't use the special sleeves or catI to II adapters.
Anyone w/ access to a metal lathe can make them for nothing.
i used scrap heavy wall tube and drilled ID to fit.

Sounds like there are different versions of this TSC Quick Hitch. The TSC Blue Book lists the following:

CAT. I QUICK HITCH 0267563 180.19
CAT. 2 QUICK HITCH 0267602 264.99
CAT. 2 HEAVY DUTY QUICK HITCH 0267571 317.99

From the picture (see attached picture I copied from the TSC Blue Book web page) I can see where that top hook would be a problem on my grader blade. There just isn't room for that hook under the pin. So, I'd have to modify the grader blade by extending the bracket up a few inches. The boom pole and the pallet mover look like there would be no interference. I haven't looked close yet, but I think the rest of my implements would be OK for that top hook also. The problem is going to be that the lower pins and the top bracket are spaced differently on everything.

PS: After looking closer at the picture, I see that the top hook is adjustable. It seems like the bolts could be replaced with pins to make that easier to do. I plan to go to TSC this weekend and do some measuring.

Another option is to just use a Cat 1 to Cat 2 adapter bushing.

The "adapter on top" I'm referring to is what radman, Casimir, and JerryT said in the other thread I mentioned above:

radman - "I have 2 3pt quick attach Spee-Co units from TSC. One cost about $180-190, and the other I got when they went out of business for $80. They are set up for standard cat. 1 3pt but unfortunately not all equipment is standard. They come with either a hook or adapter on top. For my stufff the adapter works best. I had to modify some of my equipment slightly but they work great when changing between implements. Now only takes a few minutes at most. I have a T- N-T which really makes it easy."

Casimir - "None of my implements would work with the upper hook -- the angle support below the hitch pin interferes, so I use the adapter also. It does make it easier to hook up by myself, but still requires a little juggling to get lined up right and fooling with the 3-pt lift lever and/or top link length to get the pins to slide in and out easily. Still much better than without it. It helps to have the adapters or at least Cat 2-3 bushings in the lower pins to better fill the lower hooks. Otherwise, there is quite a bit of slop. May or may not result in unusual wear. The bushings are a lot cheaper ($3 pair vs. $21 for the permanent adapters), but having the permanent adapters mounted avoids having to use locking pins in the ends of the lower hitch pins."

JerryT - "I have the Speedco from TSC. The top hook is useless but the adapter works fine. What I like best about it is that you don't have to mess with the sway adjustment each time you change tools. Unfortunately my TSC finnish mower can't be used with it. Anybody else have this problem - can it be solved?"

I'll send them a PM asking them to clarify what they meant by the "adapter" in place of the upper hook.

See the bag on top of the TSC quick tach, it contains the bushings.
The previous poster didn't want to pay $18.00 a set for many
(12 sets like me) of the bushings or else u switch all the time.
The bottom hooks ARE over size,a little larger than cat.II,
Spee-co are flame cut (like mine).
The cat.I and cat II size refers to the tractor pin size and spacing.
