I was using the grapple bucket today, then went to switch implements. When I tried to reattach the hoses from the quick attach they wouldn't lock. I cracked the threads at the quick attach cylinder and got some fluid. They then locked fine. Anyone else had this problem? If there is something operationally I can do to avoid this in the future please fill me in. Until then I'll carry the 9/16 wrench. First glitch and a minor one, 5.6 hrs now. Pictures when I get the CEO to take some.

Okay, did a search and answered my own question...woops. "Ready, Fire, Aim"

Here's a discussion that (perhaps) answers the question.

Relieving Hydraulic Pressure - Best Method? (Multi-page thread 1 2 3 ... Last Page)

Glad you found the answer to your question! :D

And yes, it happens to just about everyone sooner or later. Two ways to avoid it are:

1. Shut off the tractor, then operate the aux PTO lever up, then down, then back to neutral. That will relieve any pressure, yet still leave the quick attach locked.

2. Try to store cylinder powered implements like the grapple bucket in the shade to minimize expansion in the hoses due to sunlight and heat. On implements with hydraulic motors you should connect the two hoses together to keep them clean. I've never had that "locked up quick connect" problem with motor powered impelements, only cylinders.

David, if you couple the hoses together on hyd motors when it is cool, and then leave it out in the sun, the pressure will build up enough to make it difficult to uncouple.

I'm sure it could happen, but has never happened to me yet. The only implement that it has happened to me on was the snow plow. I pulled it out and set it in the yard while cleaning the garage and ended up cracking the fitting with a wrench to bleed it. Then I consulted TBN and found many folks with many different brands of implements had the same problem. The universal solutions were:

A. Crack a fitting with a wrench

OR

B. Put a rag over a punch and put it on the center of the fitting and give it a sharp rap with a hammer. One drop of fluid will come out and that is enough to relieve the pressure.

B. seemed to be the preferred method. :)

On the 425, I've found that a 3/8" drive socket extension is just the right size to use (rather than a punch), and has a nice smooth end that won't damage the fitting.

It's also easier to find another one in the shop after you've set it down in the woods instead of putting it back in the tool box!

The Rag lesson I learned the hard way. Be careful also when and if you relieve pressure on a tractor that you have been running. I learned the hard way when not a drop came out but a shower of hot hyro fluid all over my face. Lucky I wear glasses. Not enough to scald me, but enough to get my attention.

Yep. Have to respect that fluid under pressure. It can be very dangerous.

I just put the tit on the fitting against a flat plate on the tractor and give it a hard shove. Keeps from having to carry tools everywhere.

A rag is a different matter. It is indispensible.
