Why are some posts in a forum highlighted in color (yellow?)

Why are there sometimes two counts in the reply column, the second being in parentheses and italics - ie. 6 (4).

Also, is there any instructional page on posting on the site - I have trouble understanding how to use the functions such as quotes, font, markup, etc.

I believe those are threads that you have visited that now have new replies you have not read.

Left number is total number of replies, the number in parentheses is the number of NEW replies that have been added since you last visited that thread.
