Hey there, I'm always ready to learn. I know powershift in construction equipment refers to a pay loader or backhoe that has a planetary gear transmission connected to the engine by a torque convertor. There is a stall on the torque convertor and when the engine rpm is raised the machine will begin to move. Shifting can be done on the fly as it is constructed with planetary gears.

On tractors I would guess most are clutch driven, planetary gear transmissions. They can shift on the fly. I have opperated AG case and John Deere tractors that could shift on the fly but never knew how they were put together.

Also there is a "power"reverser transmission option. How on earth does the clutch engauge itself when the lever is pushed forward or backward as the clutch does not have be used for starting? Do power reverser/ shuttle shift use planetary gears?

JD powershift trans in farm tractors utilize a damper clutch with hyd clutch packs, hyd brake packs & planetaries. Older JD reversers utilize clutch & brake packs with a planetary. 1st photo is PS planetary and 2nd is reverser. Kubota reverser utilizes 2 hyd clutch packs(3rd photo).

Thank you for the straightforward answer!! It seems most shift on the fly transmissions would have to use planetary sets but some would use sycronized gears possibly.

How do the shift on the fly in case tractors and case maxium/ magnum work? I imagine similarly

I can't answer your question as I know nothing about CIH tractor trans.
