Question for those who live in California

According to the story, Tahoe property owners are pushing back against the proposed parcel tax if not occupied frequently enough. This is the first I have heard it must also be a legal domicile where you are registered to vote, or you get taxed. Never heard of that?

But here is the catch: it will be approved or denied by the voters. But the ones affected (property owners) are not allowed to vote. If so, how do you "push back?" From the article:

"But Cimino and other homeowners who live primarily out of town likely won't actually be able to vote on the new measure.

"The election code is actually very specific that it needs to be your legal domicile is where you can register to vote, and that's where you spend the majority of the year. So the Registrar of Voters has been tipped off that there have been cases of voter fraud, and they are pursuing that," Richmond said."

Where does this trail lead? Maybe CA can vote on making vehicle registration fees for diesel trucks 10x the current amount, and only allow owners of electric vehicles to vote?

Taxation without representation?

It's a mess... already have vacant parcel tax in Oakland and spreading fast...

In Tahoe it's worse because must be occupied 180 days per year but renting out your house for less than 180 days is illegal.

No short term rentals yet must be occupied... what's next... special taxes for those with more than 1 home?

Some Tahoe cabins are truly seasonal and not set up for year round occupancy...

I've watched the meddling hand of government regulation screw so many things up ....

If this passes, an instant population boom. Then roads will be inadequate, grocery stores will be inadequate, power inadequate, increased winter accidents from people who don't know how to drive in ice and snow, overtaxed utilities, trash and waste going into Lake Tahoe, and it goes on and on. Traffic jams where no one will even want to visit.

Not to mention the impact on Hank the Tank bear? Fewer unoccupied cabins to break into? 😀

The do-gooders in government seem to think they can give free money on only one side of the supply/demand equation without anything happening on the other side. I see it over and over and over.

This is true in many, if not most communities. You can only be a legal resident and registered voter in one community at a time.
Yes, it does kind of put second home owners behind the 8 ball. I guess one solution would be for concerned property owners to change their voter registration to the community their second home is in, but that would by extension prevent them from voting in their primary home. Residency (ie-how many months a year are you at the 2nd home) limits may apply.

The only other solution would be to allow people to be voters in multiple communities which would open up a whole 'nother can of worms and probably be unconstitiutional.

How to lose your constitutional rights, one chip at a time .....

Grass Valley, CA PD just announced an upcoming traffic blockade which will check for DUI. That is common now, but this time they are adding: "aggressive driver license checks."

Brief history:

1. DUI police roadblocks/checkpoints were originally considered illegal search and seizure ....
2. At first, police agreed to only do them on Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, and publicize the locations in advance in the media, and offer "escape routes" for people not wanting to be checked.
3. The checkpoints, over time, expanded to more weekends and are now any time of the year, day, night, whenever. They are now a frequently used tactic.
4. The escape routes were taken away. Drivers are now forcibly detained out of traffic into a line awaiting being checked by police. Come around a corner-- wham-- you are in a police checkpoint.

This new blockade is the first I have heard of "driver license checks" being added to DUI. What is next-- having to explain why you are in the area at all? Why are the neighbors children in the car with you? Pulling your child aside and away from the parent to check for injuries, ask if the parent is abusive, or ask if they have been gender shamed at home?

I am a strong supporter of law enforcement. And a stronger supporter of not losing constitutional rights against illegal search and seizure. We are losing such rights in CA.

Back in the 60's, Alabama State Highway Patrols used unpublished roadside vehicle safety inspection blockade's. If your vihicle had a serious default you were required to have it repaired before moving on. Minor infractions were either repaired on the spot or a small fine was issued.
This was of course, before State Safety Inspection Stations were established. One thing for sure, one quickly became aware of the conditon of their vehicle before traveling on a state highway.

I wrote earlier that the City of Berkeley, CA tried to expand the DUI checkpoints to search the detained vehicles for weapons. The officials were requiring drivers to open compartments and pop the trunks for inspection.

It went to court and was deemed unreasonable search and seizure.

A big reason to always have a camera of some sort running in the car when stopped by a LEO.

If it's only your word against the LEO's word, generally you will always lose.
