question for 3x20 and 4x20 owners

I was underneath my tractor today and noticed this big access at bottom of bellhousing . It looks like there should be a access plate or something to keep crap from going up in there. Why didnt john deere just slap a plate with screws there?

i noticed this over the weekend as well on my new 3720. i don't remember my 2008 3320 being this open under there but i'm not sure....

The wimply little front driveshaft is what amazes me the most.....

me too. was pretty disappointed at what i saw under there today

Just a guess, but if there was a plate it would trap more material than it would keep out. Notice the "j" opening for the shaft that would also need to have an addition seal or boot. I am sure the shaft is solid. Much larger and it would be hollow...
Any shaft failures out there?

There's a big open cavity on my 5075M pretty much like that, too. Exposed drive shaft from the rear of the engine - right off the fly wheel - basically.

The shaft is alot smaller than you'd expect for a 75hp engine - IMO. At least I was really surprised... and it's just hangin' out there in the wind, too!

Maybe, it's JD's effort at "reverse-engineering".... less-is-more??
