I have a new john deere 3005 and when greasing it I noticed two open holes in the axle housings. They are in line with the brake drums. They are about 10mm and are threaded all the way through. Are they drains or should they have plugs in them? There is no paint in the threads so I do not if they where pluged at one time. Any ideas? Thank you

The parts view doesnt show a plug so I am not sure what it is for? Maybe someone else can look at their tractor to see if they have the holes. Thanks

I'm not a Deere guy, but the '3' at the end of the model number tells me it is an economy model. As such, it probably has dry brakes, and it would not be at all uncommon for a dry brake housing to have a drain hole to alert the operator when a bull pinion shaft seal starts leaking oil into the brake area.

I assume you are referring to the bottom of the housing? The earlier models, 750's and 790's had plugs in these holes from the factory. They are drains or vent holes. Some of the earlier models would get an accumulation of condensation in the brakes and would cause rust. I would remove these plugs to allow the brakes to "breathe". I assume Deere is now omitting the plugs for the same reason, unless your dealer is removing them for preventative reasons. I would leave them open.

Thanks jd110. You are right on about the holes. I did a search for 790 and found some old posts showing the same holes. My dealer was clueless about them. Thanks
