question about Troy Bilt Horse Tiller

Hello: I'm usually on the John Deere tractor side of this forum, but I bought a used Troy bilt horse tiller yesterday that was siezed. I've looked at the engine and I will replace that, but I have a question about the pulleys on the engine shaft and transmission input that are have pulleys to connect them.

Both the pulley on the engine and transmission seem to "slide" on their respective shafts. Is this normal? It looks like the pulley on the engine side slides and all the crank shaft bolt does is keep the crankshaft key from falling out. That seems odd. On the trans side, it has a "C" clip, and the pulley slides on that shaft also...

And... I need a new (used I hope) axle for this. The one that is has is broken and fixed in a poor manor.

Go out and grab yourself a HF 5HP Honda-alike engine. They make perfect replacements for these. Though if you have the 8HP version, I would highly recommend trying to free up the OEM engine, as it will outlive you if you can get it free. Those 8HP engines (the ones with the spark plug shorting tab to stop it) on the old Horse tillers were the best running engines I've ever come across.. out of thousands I've worked on.

Can't help you on the pulleys, but on my 60's model Horse the bolt does indeed keep the pulleys in place on the engine shaft. A clip on the trans shaft sounds logical, as it is tough to access for a bolt.

A welding shop may be able to fix your drive shaft. Likely the best option for price.
