Question about Trailering a 5000 lb Tractor

   / Question about Trailering a 5000 lb Tractor #31
If you have high enough trailer sides that can keep the load contained (heavy enough steel), and your load won't shift, say because it fits tightly on all four sides or is blocked in, you don't need any other securement. Securement is meant to keep your load in place under typical driving situations including minor accidents. Your securement does not have to keep the load in place if you roll over, etc. For example, if you have a dedicated skid steer trailer that has, say, two foot steel sides and the machine you haul fits reasonably snugly on all four sides, then no other securement is needed.

Your right........ a tractor is just like a weed eater.
A tractor sliding off a trailer in city traffic is a lot more likely to injure someone.

And everyone should know the proper response to a deer when pulling a load is go right through him........
You might lose control of your rig running over a large enough animal, too. Having an unsecured tractor behind you may not help you get everything to your destination undamaged.

I use the road, too. I wish you would use it safely so you don't accidentally kill me.

   / Question about Trailering a 5000 lb Tractor #33
I picked-up a utility trailer and wish to transport my JD4105 tractor between properties. ( A few miles -- not cross country) What do I need to tie down the tractor? The trailer is 2000 lbs and 18 feet long with a gross capacity of 7000 lbs. I have some log chains and some heavy duty synthetic ratchet straps. I am assuming it needs to be secured on all four corners, but how strong must the straps be? 5K lbs each -- or 5K pounds divided by for four corners = 1,250. Also, how should the loader be positioned? Thanks in advance.

To do this right. Two chains pulling rearward and across attaching to stake pockets (chain goes down between rub rail and trailer on rear side of pocket, continues under stake pocket, before coming back up between rub rail and stake pocket attaching hook to forward side of stake pocket). Ratchet binders work the best unless you have a ratchet bar. The front you can secure with two 10,000 pound ratchet straps. pulling slightly forward (attach clip just forward of a stake pocket by going between rubrail and trailer with ratchet on outside of rub rail). Make sure no chains or straps are touching a tire or anything sot secure enough to attach chin to.

The reason for chains in the rear is driver protection. With two chains you have redundant safety from forward load shifts (such as slamming on brakes to keep from hitting a child running out to get a loose ball). Another chain across bucket front pulling rearward (again another redundant piece to stop any forward momentum/load shift either forward or side to side)

You will have a 5000 pound tractor secured to 50000 pounds. Mission accomplished.

Make sure chains are tight and stay that way. When you are tightening them make sure they are not twisted as you will have loose chains quickly when starting to drive as they untwist. Slack in the chains will cause the problem in that one situation, heaven forbid. The load will start moving forward and that jolt will snap chains, solid tension will not when within the working load limits.

If you have an implement attached, yes you should at least throw a 10000 pound strap over it. Remember with straps to avoid any sharp edges or corners. If you go over any corner/edge add an edge protector.

You Should not not have any problems with this set up in IL

All this talk about no chains reminds me of a story. My co-pilot was on his way to work when he saw a dozer sitting in the field upside down and a low boy stopped. It was a big dozer, he said it had the tracks that were triangle shaped and were about 7' tall alone. Paper said it was 30 tons or something like that.

Long story short, no tie downs and a meander in a road at 40 mph threw it off the low boys side digging into the road and flipping end over end.

Again, I did not see this but he did and it was in our paper about a year ago.

i towed thru lousiana down i10 and 12 after katrina.. the roads were mor elike a series of hills. had I not had plenty of tie downs I'd have had tractors fly of fthe back of that trailer. I say bumps were stff jumped up 6" !!! no tie downs is dangerous!

now dont talk about our roads they or the best in the country

but i always put atleast two chains on every tractor i haul wether its 2 miles or 300 miles and if its a larger tractor 3 two on rear and one on front

Here are the DOT cargo securement rules. I always prefer a source document over speculation:

http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/documents/cargo/cs-policy.pdf

If it's less than 10,000 lbs, you get a choice of three different ways to secure it. (pg. 7)
