Put a Hydraulic motor on a Badlands winch

Has any tried to put a Hydraulic motor on a Badlands winch a one of the 12-15k Electric winches.


Not sure if I want to try adding another alternator or adding a hydraulic motor to the electric winch by removing the electric motor the electric motor is a 6.5 hp what would be a good equivalent hydraulic motor

Do you know what RPM(s) the current electric motor runs at?

What would you use as the power source for the hydraulic motor? Tractor hydraulics? If yes then the flow and pressure capabilities of the tractor will help determine motor size requirements

No not sure of rpms of the motor. I was hoping some one has tried it .

Yea tractor hydraulics or my dump trucks hydraulics hope to be able to switch .

I figured I could adjust flow with engine speed . Not to worried about the speed it pulls the line just that it pulls hard.

If you don't have a winch yet, there was some mention of hydraulic winches the can run off as little as a power steering pump.... Probably best to search 4WD sites for hydraulic winches, think that is were I saw them mentioned....

I know my 10,00 pound electric winch puts a heck of a drain on my Jeep battery, twice now with not to extreme pulls I have sucked down battery to point it has shut down computer and killed engine... Even with 960 CCA AGM battery and 100 amp alternator and engine boosted to about 1600rpm for max alternator output.... Electric is not best for a lot of sustained work...

I would think you would be better off starting from scratch. The electric winches have the planetary gear sets in them so you might find that difficult to attach too. How much load are you looking to pull?

12-15k I have snatch blocks if I need to add them. I致e also been looking at trying to add another high amp alternator too.

Some place called DC power and Mechman offer 320 amp ones so that with a stock one should be able to keep up

If you can figure out the RPM on the electric motor, it might be doable.

The planetary gears are usually on the opposite side of the electric motor. Then a shaft from the motor to the gears just make it spin.

With an adapter plate for the hydraulic motor to mount in place of the electric motor, it can be done.

To figure out what motor to use, you need to do some math to get the right RPMs and to match the same pulling rating.

You would need the gear ratio, the pump GPM and the system pressure.

electric winch gear ratio is usually in the 150:1 range, hydraulic winch gear ratio
runs around 36:1 - tells me the hydraulic motor has way more torque, at way
lower speed - even if you could adapt it, gears in electic won;t be able to handle
the torque, and it would be painfully slow.
A new hydraulic winch can be had for around 1400.00

I have a MileMarker 10,500 lbs hydraulic winch on my Jeep. It uses the power steering pump, great winch and much simpler than electric.

Find a nice used commercial hydraulic winch or a pto winch and add a hydraulic motor to that. You will be time, money and quality ahead. I wouldn’t waist my time on a badlands winch to do all the conversion.
