Pushing back the edges of the fields

Now that the corn is down and the weeds have died back I have been bush hogging the edges of the fields. I love my kk bush hog. I got to wondering if it would be better to wait until early spring? What do you guys think?

If it is dry enough now AND you have the time , i would do it now, and then if the spring weather is decent won't hurt to do it again.

Fewer bugs generally now, especially if you live in a Lyme Disease area as the tick nymphs are active in the Spring.

I would do it when the ground is dry. I do not know about PA, but it has been pretty "wet" in MA this year. I have ruts everywhere. I have had ~40" of rain and melted snow so far this year, and it seems to rain whenever I have time off . Jay

I like to beat the edges back now. Once the weather gets colder, as it is now the stinging varmints are much less likely to give you a hard time.

The conditions were pretty good last week but the Water Authority was draining the water tank so we had a river running down the middle of the property. I had to call the cops to find out what was going on. I was a little worried because the water was bubbling up from the field. I could just see the Water Authority claming that I hit the pipe with the plow and that will be 1.6 million to fix it. I hope the weather is nice this week and I will be able to do some more hoggin. It can get muddy in the spring in fact there is a spot in the back that almost ate my little yanmar last spring. I was very suprised cause that little guy can almost swim. If I can get the weeds knocked back I may try to get hold of a pole saw and prune the trees back a little.

Any time is a good time to bush hog. I did some on my property just to make things wider. I am moving on to some land adjacent to mine that will never be built on. Added an extra 50 feet to my land in some areas. More land for the farmer who leases my property. And fewer weeds.

Do as much as you can now and all winter long, then in the spring time, it will be an easy job to clean up the new growth and do a little more.
