Hello,

I started a thread in Customization about putting a Gas engine on a bush hog and a fella mentioned using hydraulics instead of pulleys...

I have an 18hp vertical shaft engine and plan on using a 4 or 5ft bush hog....

I have no clue about hydraulics and would like to know what size pump and motor I could run with the 18hp engine and power the bush hog?

Thanks,
--Tom--

Hydraulics are not near as efficient as belts and pulleys in this application plus the cost would be significantly higher.

formula for figuring input HP required for a hydraulic pump is:

HP = GPM x pressure in PSI / 1714 x pump efficiency.

I had a 42 in Dixie Chopper with 18 HP Kohler magnum engine, and I sometimes would cut for 8 hrs, The swing bld bush hog usually turn at a 1 : 1 ratio up 1 : 1.5, so if you reduce the engine rpm down to about 540, using pulleys and belts you will be doing the same thing as a 18 HP tractor pulling a 48 in bush hog.

I also have the Swisher 48 pull behind with a 11 HP Honda engine.

If you go hyd pump, and hyd motor, and if using a 20 hp engine, the efficiency of the pump and motor, will produce about 14.45 HP to the shaft on the motor.

2 pullys, (double belt) $40, two belts $15= $55.
or
one pump- $150, one tank=$75, One filter and filter assembly =$50, single spool valve $100 Hoses\fittings $150. Maybe $500-600 for hydraulics. May need cooler or 300lbs of tank and hydraulic fluid on board?

I am assuming of course you are pulling this with an ATV or tractor with no hydraulics or PTO.
