Pull Start or Not

I think we'd need more info. Depends on size of engine and whether or not it had a compression release. It would probably be iffy at best, given that compression ratio is commonly in the range of 20:1, compared to less than 10:1 for a lot of mowers.

You can, but it's not advisable. For those brave enough to try it, a road gear in high range must be selected. And it should be tried on a hard surface like asphalt or concrete. Trying it on turf or gravel usually doesn't provide enough traction to overcome the compression ratio.

Many of the smaller diesel tractors come with a crank dog on the front pulley, if you're so inclined... personally , I'd think you would have to be really desperate to even try it! Would take two people so you could manage the compression release, too.

On the other hand, if you go to work on your tractor and fail to clamp the fuel cut-off in the off position and lock the compression release, you can bet it will try to start when you turn it over by hand to set the valves or timing. We call that "baiting Fate."

The pull start can be done. lower gears will rotate the engine easier as long as there is traction enough to make it rotate, I wouldnt use 4x4 as the drive line is not good enough on the front wheels to try that.

I assume you don't mean rope pull-start. I would opt for jump start.

I decided to wait. We are getting the starter and alternator rebuilt and will put in a new battery as well as new battery cables. Its on the used Farm Pro 2425 that I recently bought. We have been working daylight till after dark on the u-pick peach farm and I really haven't had time to work on it. Will get to it next week. Thanks for all the comments. I still don't have it off the trailer that I pulled it in here with.
