I've got an early version of one of these , I want to adapt it to my PTO. My thoughts are building a carryall type frame and mount all the stuff on it. I need to crank the alt. at around 2000 rpm, give or take a few hundred for adjustment. Any ideas on ways to spin it up would be appreciated. I'd rather not have to rev the tractor engine up all that much to get to 2K. Thanks for your help.

540 PTO at rated speed?

I'd see if you can find a pully between six and eight times the size off the one on the generator, so you can run the engine somewhere between idle and rated speed.

How about a hydraulic motor instead of PTO?

Either use the pullys as suggested or consider a small gas motor. You should be able to get a 4hp vert saft lawn mower (new) for about $125. Gear it down about 1.5:1. Then you have a portable welder.

I believe that when you used your system on your vehicle, you were running the engine at 2000 RPM. This would put the alternator rotating at least twice that speed. An alternator just does not have much output at that low speed.

As I mentioned in the other post, you could likely find a junked out bush hog or finish mower (preferred) that would give you a gearbox with 3:1 gear ratio. Further step up could come from the pulleys added.

As another gentleman mentions in this post you can also drive it hydraulically via a motor. This is the approach that I am planning on taking with mine.

I say go with the pulleys, but they could cost a lot of $$$. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I'll dig around and see what kind of stuff I can scrounge up.

Find a pto gearbox for a generator designed to run at 3600rpm.. that gives you a 6.6:1 ? right

That will put plenty of rpm on that alternator.. could soup it up even morw with a 2:1 pulley..

I've thought about something similar. I want to mount a ~15kw generator on a carryall and use it to run a welder and other electrical stuff, plus backup for the house (we are in the sticks). I have an old datsun 4spd tranny, wonder what kind of ratio choice that would give to match engine load/speed/PTO RPM? hmmmm.... /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

I think you'd have to run it "backwards" i.e. PTO to the output side and generator to the input side.

Don't know the rear-end ratio that was made for, but you can likely get 3 or 4:1 out of it. Just put it in 1st and count the rev's out for each one in.....then let us know! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
