I’ll never forget making a big mistake of turning on a PTO while hooked to a spreader one cold morning. The material in the spreader froze, despite no freeze warnings on my weather forecast. I didn’t realize it was frozen and burned up my pto clutch packs.

Was it a manure spreader by chance? Frozen manure becomes as solid as concrete until it thaws.

Hey, you forgot to explain how an Allis Chalmers WD has a "transmission" driven PTO, but it's still live.

Best system in the world until they came up with hydrostat transmissions.

Did the Allis Chalmers WD have a two stage clutch? The way the clutch is built is the basic difference between a Transmission Driven PTO and a Live PTO. In spite of what they are called, both are transmission driven. The difference is in the clutch being either a one or two stage clutch.

Most transmission driven PTOs - even the older styles with single plate clutches - could still be run in stationary mode by putting the transmission in neutral and engaging the clutch.

We haven't even started to talk about multi-speed PTOs or the older style of power take off which was an independently clutched belt drive. Some tractors were made with both the modern independent 540 splined PTO to drive implements on the 3pt hitch, AND an independently clutched belt drive for driving stationary implements.

No, the WD's had a "wet", hand clutch, that was separate from the foot clutch that powered the transmission driven pto.

The WD system was great for a number of reasons. The hand clutch lever was positioned such that a kid too small to reach the foot clutch could drive it. That wouldn't be much of a selling point today I suppose. (Brakes? We don't need no stinking brakes.) The hand clutch stopped the tractor but let the PTO continue running while the foot clutch stopped everything. When they came out everyone who had a baler wanted one. Before, you had to stop and take the tractor out of gear when the baler started to load up.

Yeaaa, it really was intended to be used with the rotobaler that AC pioneered.
