How critical is the HP rated for the tiller on the low side ? The 5' tiller I just bought says it needs 25 HP. Knowing the tractor ratings are a little flakey and my compact (Bolens G275) is 20+ years old, I figure I'm right around that. My plan would be to just not utilize the full depth of the tiller - especially on the first pass. This is existing garden areas that I have plowed and disced in past years. Any thoughts ?

I can tell you I have a JD 2320 which has a 24 HP motor with 18HP at the PTO. I run a JD 655 tiller (55 inch width) and I used it to break sod for a garden without any issues.

Bottom line, I don't think you will have any issues.

Well, seeing as you now own it, you do what you have to do in order to be able to use it. That may be shallow tills, more overlap per till etc. Might not have to do anything special, a lot depends on your ground. I think that the hp ratings are usually for worst case circumstances.

Good luck with your tiller.
