I was reading recently that adding a 2 micron filter will double the life of hydraulic motors and pumps, compared to a 10 micron filter. So, I'm back to the idea of adding a filter to the PTO. This wouldn't be a permanent installation. I would imagine hooking it up periodically. I know this has been discussed before but I can't find the relevant threads.

I guess there are a few options:

Low pressure: I assume one could add a low pressure filter, like used in a filter cart. This would be great because it's cheap. However, the initial "surge" when the PTO is turned on might cause problems. I doubt this would work.

Medium pressure: I assume a safer option would be to add a medium pressure (1000psi) filter, like the Parker 15CN series.

High pressure: This is probably the safest option. Something like the Parker 15P series (3000psi). However, even in a return line application, this seems like over kill.

Thoughts?

I'd think the medium-pressure filter, on a mount with a bypass valve, would be the most affordable solution to make your own "filter cart" setup that you used periodically. I, too, would like to have a filter setup that filtered more of the oil than the current PT setup...

You can install a bypass filter on just about anything.

For instance, on the PT, the the only filter is just before the charge pump and it is a10 micron filter, but that is only filter as a slow GPM flow.

You could tap into any other hyd circuit and use a flow divider to route a small flow , say two GPM through a 1 micron bypass filter.

Over time, you will eventually send all the fluid through that filter, which will collect anything smaller than 1 micron.

On one of my Kohler engines, I had a bypass filter on it, and the engine stayed very clean with very little sludge when finally broken down for repair.

A filter cart would work also by plugging into the tank and running the cart filter for whatever duration you need .

I believe one of the PT owners did just that. Just can not remember who.
