Yesterday, I mowed my horse pastures with my 60" Bush Hog. Instead of using the 540 pto range and running at 2800 rpm, I used the 1000 rpm pto range and ran the tractor at 1800 rpm. This gave me a pto speed of 640 rpm and provided more than enough power to mow. It seemed like less wear and tear on the tractor. I would not recommend actual brush hogging or mowing unknown areas this way, but it sure seemed to work great for my clean fields. Used less fuel too.

Disclaimer- If you try this, use extreme caution. It is very dangerous to over-speed pto driven implements. Death or injury can result.

This works and actually works quite well, I've done it myself. BUT you probably won't hear your dealer recommend it "ON the record".
