Ever since I purchased my 8N years ago, it's had a sleeve or an
extension over the PTO shaft. It has a set screw and a zirc fitting. Does anyone know what this thing is for.
Repair?
Extension?

I'm having a heck of a time getting the set screw out to take
a look. When I do, I'm sure all will be explained.

just curious...

Without seeing it my guess is an overrunning clutch. It is used for a piece of eguipment like a bush hog that will keep you moving even with the clutch pushed in, don't ask how I know :)
It aso brings the PTO shaft size to a now standard diameter where the early 8n's and 9n's had a smaller diameter shaft.

That would be my guess also.

My neighbor bought an old IH 57 two-wire hay baler and hooked it up to his 8N without an overrunning clutch. He got the tractor moving and the baler spinning OK. But when he tried to stop the tractor with the PTO engaged, the end of the pto shaft was corkscrewed by the inertia of the baler flywheel that just wanted to keep spinning. More modern tractors with 2 stage clutches prevent this from happening.

It is a clutch... I remember the fellow saying that now that you mention it.
It's been 15 years! lol

thanks for the mind jolt :D

Might keep you from needing a casket when you're bushhogging in trees.

Once you pull the cap and zerk out.. you can rotate the outside of the orc till the outter and inner hole lline up, then driv eout the 2" x 5/16" roll pin that holds it on.

that is.. IF you need to remov eit.. etc.

It's wobbling pretty badly. Are there any replaceable parts inside, or should I just pick up a new one?

That big ol' set screw is a bear... I'm not sure how I'm going to get that bugger out...

How does that thing work anyhow?

I meant how does the ORC work, not the set-screw! ha!

They were mostly used on older tractors that didnt have the live pto in them to keep from pushing you until machine momentum ran down. (I have a couple around here someplace that have never been used) -----I never liked them. thanks; sonny580

it works like a ratchet wrench.. driven in one direction.. freewheels inthe toher.

they wear out when yo don't grease them.. or with extended use.. just like anything else..

get a new one.. no real user sericeable parts inside.....

I used to replace the roll pin inside (the roll pin holds the inner assembly on the PTO shaft)often enough to keep a few on hand. It would wobble because the pin would crack while bush hogging. Pop the zerk and screw, line up the holes and drive out the old pin and tap in a new one.

Got the ORC off... Pin drove out just like you guys said. I'll check the pin later
to see if it indeed looks broken(although I didn't see multi-pieces) or the unit
is toast.

One thing I noticed when I took the clutch off was how short the pto shaft is
on the 8N. I don't think my bush hog would even hook up. I wonder if the clutch was on there simply to make it usable with modern drive shafts.

Also, the inside lip of pto housing is threaded. What was that for?

There use to be a dust cap similar to the front wheel caps for the pto. Was a nice feature used mine to stop a leak till I had a chance to replace the seal.

the 8n oem pto is a 1 1/8" 6 spline stubby job.. the sae standard that came out later and is now common for 540 is 1 3/8" 6 spline.

many people use a 1 1/8 to 1 3/8 orc to make the jump, vs buying a new pto shaft assembly... orc is 45-65$.. pto assy is about 120$ for a new shaft bearing and carrier.
