The PTO disengages under load on my 861. There is no end play or side play in the shaft. Where do I start to diagnose the problem?

I would have to say there is some end play for it to engage and then disengage. Check to see if the snap ring has broken and came out. There is a sleeve internally that you can check but that takes a little more digging. Down load a breakdown of the shaft section and it will help you understand the assembly a little better

It might be that the nut that hold the fork on the pto support might be loose or the ball or shifter rail has a flat spot. Take your side cover off and move the shifter rail with a long screwdriver to see if you can detect any play. If your shifter rail has worn a flat spot you can loosen the nut at the end of the fork and turn the shifter rail. The detent grooves are all the way around the shaft. You will probably need a cut wrench cause the area is tight.

Thanks Kirk. I rotated the shifter rail to see if that helps. It feels like it might. I have the hydraulic pump off for a rebuild right now so it may be a week or two before I get a chance to test it out. I will report back.

Any resolution yet?

Not yet....hydraulic pump is back on and working better than ever. Won't quit raining long enough to get the finish mower out! I should know something by this time next week. I will report back.

Rotating the shifter rail did not help. Might actually be worse now, a bungee cord no longer keeps it from disengaging. What else could it be? Should I pull the shaft next? Top cover? What should I be looking for?

   / PTO Question #9
when you say it disengages, is the handle popping back, or is the handle staying in 'engaged' but the shaft not turning?

The handle pops back. With the bungee on, I could hear gears grinding after it popped out.
