Neal, jumping out of gear is normally caused by PTO shaft bearings being worn or a snap-ring retainer being out of position. Does your PTO shaft seem to have some slop or in-out movement? When the shaft moves around, the gear is not held at a perfect perpendicular to the driving gear and pressure tends to force the gears to disengage.

ditto that. if it's a gear model. and what will happen is that dog clutch and the pto shaft end will get chewed up and start getting harder to slide.. untill they won't slide. the beating in motion will also eventually mushroom the back of the pto shaft.

on the gear models it's a 4 bolt job to pull the shaft if it has play. can then remove some split rimgs drom the carrier off.. repalce bearings, seal ring and seal..e tc. 50$ or so gets you all the parts inculding gasket..

if bearing carrier housing is damagd so it won't hold snap rings.. get a new assy for about 120$

keep in mind pto shaft passes thru an inter sump seal between hyds and diffy, so you must drain both prior to pulling the shaft..

swapping shafts is about a 2 on a scale of 1-10.. no harder than an oil change. rebuilding a shft is about a 3.5 or 4 on a scale of 1-10.. hint.. small screwdriver like a jewlers and a pair of needle nose pliers will make snap ring removal ez.. they don't have eyelets like e-clips and circlips...
