Milling lumber from logs

I've never heard of such a thing until today. Here is a pic I stole from the website above. Anyone use such a monstrosity on a regular basis?

Taken from the same website as an example of needing some rear ballast! That poor front axle isn't going to be with us very long.

My BIL has a "WoodMizer" portable saw. He hasn't had it out of the barn in 3 or 4 years. I've offered to buy it, rent it, steal it, or just USE it. "Naw.... I might need it and it wouldn't be here"........ Oh well.

There's 2 HUGE cherry trees in the back of our place that need to become a new family room. That'd be just the ticket.

Buzz saws (sometimes called cordwood saws) have been around for a long time. When I was growing up, most of the local farms had one, usually belt driven mounted on the front of a tractor. Their primary use is to cut smaller limbs or slab wood into firewood length. They require minimal horsepower and enable you to cut smaller limbs very quickly, leaving the cut wood in a single pile which I find a lot easier to load.

The newer ones have a three point hitch mount, powered by a 540 rpm pto shaft.

I have both types, although I no longer use the belt driven saw, since I don't have a serviceable tractor with a belt pulley.

I've used one, but they scare the cr** out of me.

I have one for my antique Economy Tractor.

When I was growing up there was one of those that was owned jointly by the neighbourhood (4 families). It had a hardwood frame and was driven by a belt pulley off the tractor owned by whoever's wood was being cut at the time. It didn't have a guard over the saw either. Every spring, it made the rounds and every able-bodied man and boy gathered for a day at each farm to cut next winter's fuel wood. We then had to split our own wood (by hand with a double-bitted axe), let it dry for the summer and put it away in the fall. Now I remember why I left the farm.:D

Cut firewood for over 10 years with a saw similar to the one in photo, the main difference being mine was homemade, stationary and belt driven from the
tractor belt pulley (usually an LA Case).
This is a good set up and with a sharp saw and the right size lenghts a lot
fire wood could be cut easily and in a short time.
They were safe to use as far as circular saws are concerned.

Look at the front tires on the tractor in the second pic! The back ones look like they are just about to get off the ground too! Can you say 'counterweight'?
