Anybody have any experience with a PTO post peeler? I've been looking for one and haven't found much, Mobark makes a pretty complex one called the PS8 but that is all I have found in the states. Their salesman was not aware they even made the unit so I guess it is not to popular. I've ran across quite a few used units on the web.
Yahoo! - 301 Moved Permanently

I really like the looks of this Cundley unit but it is from overseas. Seems perfect for my application.

Anybody know of an American distributor for one of the foreign units? Ever use one?

Well I am getting close to making a purchase so I thought I would post a few of the others that I am looking at and get opinions and hopefully one of our international members might have even seen/used one of these units. The more I looked I found myself on international websites as I had difficulty finding many american units similar to those in other parts of the world. Here are the candidates so far. Looks like they will range in price from around 15 - 40k delivered depending on options.

I have no idea what I am talking about but just from watching I like the first and last one. Seem to get the job done simple and efficient. Interesting equipment.

I agree. Both of those seem to be heavier duty (and quite a bit more expensive) than the Cundley and Posch. I do like the extra round saw on the Posch model for splitting posts as well as the ability to put a point on the post. But it seems like a pretty light duty machine compared to the others.

Thought I would give a quick update.

The Morbark is coming is right at $51,000 with no tax or freight.
The Rabaud is coming in just over $21,000 delivered from France.
Cundey told me the unit was $10,000 but never responded to my requests for pricing that included freight.
Posch and Neuhauser never responded to multiple requests for pricing.

I also looked at a used Morbark that included some extras but it was also 50k. I'm leaning towards ordering the Radbaud as that is the unit i like and it offers a automatic engage/disengage option for the rollers. Plus they have been really good about answering my questions and e-mails. Going to take about 2 months from when the money is transferred.

One thing I can figure out is why these are not more popular in North America like they are in Europe.

What exactly are you trying to accomplish? Are you going into the fence post business?

I am, just on a small scale. I've got a small skidder purchased. Here is the thread.
http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/construction-equipment/338693-new-toy-vermeer-v-430a.html

Plan is to use the little skidder to harvest post size trees and then make posts. My plan is to use the waste material to make biochar, and other waste wood products like pellets or mulch. I already have some land lined up as well as a commercial buyer for the posts.

Main reason for the thread is to help the next guy who is looking for a post peeler as it took me a long time to find these different manufacturers and machines. There is simply not a lot of information on these machines out there, especially in the USA. It's strange how many people have looked at this thready but so few comments. Over 500 people and only a couple posts. I'm also open to suggestions form folks who have experience in this industry.

We are working on purchasing the Rabaud Robopel 250 as I think it fits my needs perfectly.

Maybe you can find a company that makes posts and line up a fact finding visit with them? I imagine they would welcome you, as long as they aren't really close by and know that you will be in direct competition with them. There's a place here on my way to work that makes fence posts and landscaping timbers, and another sawmill just down the road that makes telephone poles. They must both have some piece of equipment that debarks the timber. Then again, timber is BIG business here in SC.

That's a great idea. I actually did go tour another post manufacturer and looked at a rounder and a lathe form Woodlandia. Really interesting equipment.
Rounder

Lathe -Really cool machine for making huge log dowels and log homes. Essentially a lincoln log maker.

Woodlandia products ? Woodlandia Web Site

I really like both of those but I'm just not setup to utilize either at this time. I loved how perfect the posts/dowels ended up and that big log lathe is just plain awesome.

It looks like there are 3 big post distributors up in the Black Hills who buy posts. All 3 have their own treatment plans and if I choose I can just have my posts treated and sell them myself but I'm not sure that is what I want to do just yet. I got some pricing from one and am working on the other 2. Looks like they buy peeled posts in a range from about $2.50 to $15 depending on the size from 3" x 6'6" to 8" x 8'. They have clear specifications as far as tolerances and bundle size. I may need to buy a large loader at some point but I have some friends with equipment who will help me get the trucks loaded in the mean time.

The trees I am planning to peel are ponderosa pine. The machine can handle up to 250 mm which is just under 10 inches. Which works out good as the biggest post they will buy is 8".

Plan is to work mobile until I can get a building with 3 phase power (already checked with utility) and build a permanent facility that uses the waste material to produce heat and biochar.

The Robopel 250 has been ordered. Should be here in about 8 weeks after manufacturing, a boat ride, and a truck ride.

From my understanding they will work on most types of wood including cedar.

Well I got an update that the unit is supposed to be completed late next week and ship the following week. Expected delivery in Nebraska around August 20.

They are supposed to forwarding me some documents for Import Customs Clearance. Apparently most people use an agent/broker for this. This is my first time importing something like this so I am not familiar with this process.

Anybody have any suggestions on how to go about doing this "customs clearance" correctly? Things to look out for or avoid? Thanks for your time and help.

Would be cool to do poles for hop yards too. About 20'.

I have had some request for tee pee poles similar to what you are talking about but smaller.

I had a hiccup in shipping. Apparently the "agent" that was supposed to be handing the customs paperwork let this unit set in a warehouse for about 3 weeks because the paperwork did not get turned in. I finally figured it out this week as I was expecting delivery and started calling people to get a tracking number. Now that has been resolved so hopefully in about 3-4 weeks I will have the peeler. I Am really excited to get started. Been stockpiling some material from a burned area.

I never cease to be amazed at the number and variety of functions the PTO can operate. Limited only by necessity and inventiveness. Really informative thread--I would bet the US makes these types of manufacturers cringe, what with our high litigator to citizen ratio. I can see no way to "idiot-proof" any of them, and a number of ways they could maim a person. I would bet the two that didn't return your call had no desire to export here. Good luck with the endeavor--and be careful!

Hello roadhunter,

I'd like to see some more pictures of that grader/scraper. Is that white piece on back just for weight?

Hello roadhunter,

The white piece is a chunk of timber that helps when pushing show. The box blade was something I threw together with some scrap I beam and Channel. Adding the hydraulic top link makes it much more useful. IMG_0025.jpg
