PTO operated machine

We had one years ago, but not PTO driven. An old IH with spade wheels, and chain driven. Actually horse drawn, Dad took the trucks out from under the front, and attached to the drawbar.

We never planted less than 100 lbs. of potato's, and one year 500 lbs. That baby sure saved a LOT of work..!! Wish I had it now..!

Same here. We used to have one we owned jointly with another family who had the tractor to pull it. That was a beautiful machine and sure saved on digging forks. Our's was not pto driven, it was ground drive with steel wheels and very aggressive tread. We would harvest around a ton of potatoes out of our garden and then another good amount from our friend's garden. One problem it had was, rocks the size or a little smaller of num. 2 stone would get jammed in the conveyor an stop the machine. It would just make the wheels skid but was a pain to get out.

When we moved, the digger stayed with the tractor that could pull it. I heard recently they still use it. Looking again to find something to dig potatoes other than a digging fork.

Tucker,

Have you seen one of these potato plow. Looks easy enough to build.

And unless in sand, it looks frail enough to not last long :) The vertical member looks a bit weak as does the horizontal. But in sand, should roll out a few potatoes.

I have seen them in action and they do work pretty well. That is all we used before we got the fancy machine. An old horse drawn potato plow chained the the back bumper of the van. :D Boy, was that fun.

I think that plow does look a little lacking in strength for hard soil but some steel and a welder would fix that.
