How do I replace the PTO oil seal on my '1972 135 Massey Ferguson. Any help will be appreciated.

it's very likely like a ford pto shaft setup.. or at least some of the ferguson and mf's are.

IE.. pull assy, disassemble shaft and bearing assy from bearing carrier removing split rings.. drive old seal out.. new seal in.. reassemble, reinstall.

15 minute job on a ford of similar era

Spot on soundguy you just gotta drain trans first and then undo 4 bolts around the outside of the shaft

yep... i was giving a basic rundown.. oil and bolts are left up to the owner as an exercise.. :)

instead of draining fluid point the nose down a slope or raise the rear end and use jackstands Worked for me wen I changed the tpo seal on o 55 600 ford and a mf35

How do I replace the PTO oil seal on my '1972 135 Massey Ferguson. Any help will be appreciated.

From the 135 service manual (my 135 is a 1964 diesel Deluxe with multipwer):

Removal:
Drain oil from the center housing and transmission
Remove check chain brackets and screws securing PTO retainer plate to the housing
Remove cover cap from the PTO shaft
Insert a punch through the hole in the PTO shaft and pull shaft, bearing and oil seal retainer out of the housing as an assembly.

Reinstallation
Start the complete PTO shaft assembly into the tractor and align splines into the PTO clutch pack
Lubricate the O-ring seal on the seal retainer and carefully push retainer and shaft into place
Secure PTO assembly with retaining plate and screws.

bad advice for a 6xx series to do it that way.

it works fine on a common sump machine like a 9-2-8n, but on a machine with a seperate hyds sump and diffy sump.. when you pull that pto shaft, you open up a hole between the sumps, and the hyd fluid will flow in to the diffy.

meaning you could / will contaminate your gear oil with hyd oil.. not good.

even if you ran utf in both, the 2g of hyd sump oil will overfill the diffy sump leading to leaky rear axle seals.. not good :( :(


remember.. onthe 53-64 machines, there is a seal between the center and diffy sump the pto shaft passes thru....

Thanks for the heads up on the 600....but it worked with no ill effects and no change of levels.


The 600 I have in my barn originally came with a mounted trencher, My neighbor bought it in the early 70's. I have only seen one military picture of a 600 Ford with a trencher you have any pictures of a beast like that?

I've seen a few 00 with an everette trencher.

If the hyds section didn't raise your diffy, then I'd say the hyds were a bit low on oil. sump holds 2 gallons normal fill, and will hold an extra if needed for external cyls. In practice, with only the 3pt being used.. it could get away and still pickup with probably a gallon in there.. thus may have been low.

if both sumps had utf in them, then the mixing would not be an issue.. but if one sump had utf, and one gear oil.. or worse.. if one sump had hyd fluid and one sump had gear oil, then the hyd fluid could potentially contaminate the gear oil. again.. if hyds level was artifically low.. probably not an issue.

lastly.. if the diffy was overfilled, and the seals were exceptionally good, then you would not notice an overfill in the diffy.

the fact remains unchanged though that snatching that shaft allows the hyds to drain into the diffy.. no doubt about it... you can look straight intot he open tail end and verify, plus look at the exploded parts diagrams. I'm not making this up. I've probably had every pto out of my fords from everything under my 4600 and down..
