2004 (?) New Holland TC 45
Re: New Holland TC 45
For some the PTO lever was very hard to disengage and engage. I had to really muscle it either way. Finally I learned if I sprayed WD40 or lithium grease on the junction of the linkage (from behind the tractor, on left side) it would move in to and out of engagement much easier. I do not use the tractor that much now, just mowing 4 - 6 acres with a bushhog. Recently, after I had completed my mowing, I disengaged the PTO/mower, but it would not FULLY DISENGAGE. I turned the engine off anyway. Since then when I try to start the tractor, the engine turns over fine, however, it will not start. While holding the key in the start position trying to start the engine I noticed the PTO was actually turning as the engine was turning over (but not starting). I am sure the engine will not start because the PTO is not fully disengaged. I have even tried filing out the slot for the PTO lever, attempting to give it more room to "travel" back to disengage. That did not work; I don't know if I did not file back far enough or if that is the thing to do anyway. I'm wondering if possibly the linkage is bent (due to having to force it in and out of PTO) in the past.

Has anyone got any recommendations? It would greatly be appreciated...the grass/weeds are getting higher and higher by the day. HELP!!!

Its a long shot but is your clutch working properly? I had a mechanic look at my pto because it would only engage when the tractor was shut off. The clutch pedal had got bent probably from accidently driving over a stump. Mechanic looked at the linkage and remedied it with a steel bar by bending the pedal under the cab so it would have full motion.
Good luck!

Roman, thank you for your reply and input. My NH TC45(D?) has a hydrostatic transmission (two pedals: one pedal for forward, and one pedal for reverse). The lever to engage/disengage the PTO has always been hard to shift into and out of engagement. I finally learned that if I sprayed the linkage connection with either WD40 of lithium, it would make the shifting of the lever much, much easier. I would have to do that each time I began using the tractor. Is there some way to "adjust" the linkage? It just seems that it (linkage) needs to travel a little to make the PTO disengage. Where the PTO lever comes down (vertically) and connects with a rod/shaft that is horizontal and leads over to the right to the transmission(?) is the place I am talking about. At the end of the vertical rod is a "U-shaped" connection point where the vertical and horizontal rod meet. I can't see if there are threads on the vertical rod at the "U". I just feel if I could adjust the length of the vertical rod at the connecting point, it would travel a little further, thereby making the horizontal rod move further thereby causing the PTO to disengage. What do you think? Your comments, as well as others are welcomed.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but on that tractor wouldn't the pto keep running if the pto clutch was worn out? Doesn't the pto clutch effectively disengage it?
