I HAVE FORD 3000 GAS TRACTOR. PTO LEVER IS LOOSE. I CAN SEE IT IS TURNING THE SHAFT BUT NOT ENGAGING ANYTHING,CLUTCH IN OR OUT. EVIDENTLY SOMETHING HAS BROKE OR COME LOOSE INTERNALLY. ANY INSIGHT WOULD BE WELCOME .THANKS

nothing much in side to come loose it is most likely to be the roll pin in the shaft the lever turns

Do you have a twin stick tranny or single? And has anyone messed with the pto shaft lately?
With the engine off grab the pto shaft and see if you can slide it in and out at all. It should not move at all. Could be that the circlip that holds your rear pto bearing in place has failed allowing the shaft to slide in and out.
Secondly, on a twin stick model, if the pto is removed or has slid out more than a half inch or so due to a bad circlip the sliding coupler will fall down out of place.
It is a simple task of removing the 3 bolts that hold the pto handle in and reaching in and putting it back in the correct position. Once you open it you will see what needs to be done.
This is not the case on the single stick models.
Post back with your findings.

is there any play in the dog clutch lever?
ATT; ULTRADOG MN . THX FOR YOUR RESPONSE. I HAVE SINGLE STICK TRANNY , 4SP. TOOK OFF PTO LEVER PLATE (3 BOLTS ) CAN SEE "FORK" THAT PTO LEVER INSERTS INTO. SHOULD BE EASY TO RE INSERT, BUT FORK SEEMS TO BE TOO LOW TO LINE UP W/ LEVER. CANNOT MOVE FORK . AND PTO SHAFT WILL NOT MOVE IN OR OUT. ANY ADVICE ANYONE ? THANKS

There is a pin that attaches the pto handle to the shaft. I have seen that pin broken allowing the handle to turn on the shaft. Inspect closely to see if that is the case. Also, I wonder if the pin broke and someone didn't re pin it 180ｰ out.
