PTO kicking out of gear

I am a newbie tractor owner and was trying to mow yesterday with my finish mower, but it wouldn't stay in second gear. It would run for about 20 seconds, then kick itself into N. It would run in 1st, but it would kick itself out of 2nd whenever I tried to use it. Any explanations? Am I just not doing something right? Thanks for the help.

Your subject line says the PTO is kicking out but it sounds like the transmission is kicking out of 2nd. It that an HST or manual transmission B7100?

No, the tractor will continue to drive, but the PTO kicks into N and stops spinning.

It is the manuel transmission.

So the PTO kicks out in 2nd gear. Hmm. I don't think your doing anything wrong. I would check the linkage to see that it is engaging all the way. Beyond that I would not know. There are quite a few sharp people on this board though, someone may have experience with that and reply.

I think he means that the 2nd speed of the pto is kicking out. The B7100 has a 3 speed pto. I'm not sure what could cause this, maybe a worn gear. I have a parts B7100, if you need parts give me a shout.

Yeah, that is what is happening.

The handle is very loose and doesn't feel like it is seating in when I put it in 2nd or 3rd speed. First is all the way back, so it feels like it gets in when I put it in first. It runs fine in first as well.

Thanks for the offer. I will have to have someone look at it to tell me what is wrong. I barely have learned to operate the thing properly, much less work on it!
