Fairly common problem. Easiest is (but not recommended) to put a rubber bungee on the lever to hold it in gear. What is happening is the cogs on the collar inside the rear end housing that slide the PTO into gear have worn and rounded off and under load they are pushing the collar away, popping it out of gear. To correctly repair, the top cover of the rear end comes off (that is usually the 3pt lift assy), the pto shaft comes out the back and the shift assy can be removed then. It is held in place by 6 bolts around it's base. Sometimes the tractor will need to be split between the transmission and the rear end. Once the shift assy is out, it can be disassembled and inspected very easily. New or used parts are available, if you need help finding them let me know.
