Massey Ferguson GC2610
I have a 2009 GC2610 and the PTO quit working while roto-tilling. The spindle can be turned by hand when the clutch is not engaged. However, the engine dies when I try to engage the PTO. Any thoughts?

Welcome to TBN and also to the "GC group".

Does the engine also die when you try to engage the PTO clutch if you do not have the rear PTO lever engaged? If so, perhaps you have broken a gear.

For how the PTO clutch works, see How Massey Ferguson GC 1723 & 1725 hydraulics are plumbed and scroll down to post #27.

does it lug down and die or is it like shutting key off?
issue between seat and clutch switches will make it act like key turned off.

WOW! There is a lot of back and forth on GC PTOs. Will take me a while to absorb.
I'm pretty handy with a wrench, is there a good place to purchase an in-depth service manual for such extensive repairs?

The engine dies when either the rear or mid PTO is selected but only after engaging the PTO clutch.
When I get home, I'll try engaging the clutch with neither PTO selected and see what happens.

Thanks for your help.

The engine shuts off like turning off the key. Pretty instantaneous.
There are no extraneous (mechanical, clunking, or grinding) noises. It sort of acts like a safety/kill switch operation.

Update, the engine dies when the PTO clutch is simply engaged and when both PTO selectors, rear & mid, are in the neutral position. Does this seem more like an electrical/safety switch issue?

that is my suspicion.

It does sound like a safety switch issues, but seems strange to me. The most likely cause of the engine quitting when engaging the pto clutch would be the seat safety switch. Assuming you are sitting on the tractor when you engage the clutch. But if i was the seat switch the tractor would also quit if you put it in gear. The pto safety switch is normally open, so if that was bad you would not have an issue. This leads me to think that the issue is the engine stop relay.

If no bad switch or messed up wires is a safety relay (item 5) that shuts eng off if the pto-seat switches are not correct signals. right side of steering column under the covers.

wondering if relay acting up and sensing not in seat when pto engaged.
The safety start relay (5) is located on the RH side of the
steering column. The safety relay will not let the engine
start if the PTO is engaged or the range lever is in gear.
The safety relay will also shut the engine OFF if the PTO
is engaged or the range lever is engaged and the
operator is not sitting in the seat.
I would think seat switch itself is ok as unit does start. but a jumper can bypass it and fully rule out for testing rest.

EDIT: info is for a 2010 GC24xx, the 23hp version of the 25hp GC26xx. all info should be the same as only difference between the 2 is 200 +/- rpm using the same exact engine.
