Hello guys, I have a 1972 Ford 2000 tractor, and when i engage the PTO, it will spin just fine. But when I attach my bush hog to it, and then try to engage the PTO, it will grind badly and will not engage. The drive shaft to the mower will turn very slowly while it grinds, but it still doesn't engage. Does anyone have a solution to this puzzling problem?

Also, the light on the dashboard that tells me if the battery is being charged, stays on. I just replaced the battery after replacing the old one that had been sitting in the tractor for 5 years without much use, so i don't want to run it down. It is a 12volt diesel if that helps anything. I hooked a multi-meter to the battery before i started the engine, and while the engine was running, and i don't think there was a difference.
I guess i just answered my own question, but how would i go about fixing the generator? or would i just need to replace it?

Thanks all help is GREATLY appreciated.

Make sure the brushes are not stuck. I had a car with stuck brushes in the generator. A smack with a hammer freed them but a visual inspection is better.

put a meter across the battery. That will tell you the voltage. Charging will be 13-14.5 v. If it's 12v it is not charging. If it's 12.5v -- rev the motor up to 2500 rpms and recheck at that rpm.

If it's the original lucas genny, full field it.

there is a small and large wire on t he back. large is armature.. small is field.

jump bat hot to field.. see if lamp goes out.

if it does, unjumper and see if it stays out.

if so.. shut down and restart.. see if it stays out. sometimes the regulator contacts get junked up and a full field / repolerization fixes them.

other times ya can clean them.. other times it's a 25$ reg.

this all asusmes gen is good.

to test gen.. do a motor test.

slip belt off.

jump bat hot to field AND armature.. genny should spin.. most gennies that motor.. charge.. most that charge.. will motor.

if she motors.. check vreg..etc.

keep in mind not much charge happens UNDER 900-1000 rpm..

post back if ya need more gen / regulator help.

pto.. is this the dual clutch 8spd twin stick? if so.. sounds like pto section is stuck, or the clutch has reached it's usefull lifespan, assuming freeplay is adjusted correctly..

I'm not sure if its a dual clutch... (how would i go about figuring that out?) but it is the 8 speed twin stick. I just don't see why it will spin with nothing attached, but when i hook the bush hog up, it grinds.

And thanks for the gen help, i will test it early tomorow morning!

About the gen, i hook the battery up to the gen, hot to the field wire. (i apologize for my ignorance beforehand) While the engine if off but the key turned to the on position? Then, if the light goes out, take the clamp off and see if it is still off. If it is still off, start the engine and see if the light turns off once started? or re do the whole procedure? I understand the hooking up the generator and seeing if it spins hahah.

I hooked the positive cable up to the bottom connecter on the generator, and the light went off. what does this mean?

please re-read my posts, as the exact info you need to full field / repolarize is contained there.

what happens after restarting, now that you have repolarized it?

as for the pto.. the reason it doesn't grind with nothing on it is because the pto shaft has very little mass and will just engage and spin.. with a load, there is grinding.

most 8spds are live pto.. but if you don't want to 'guess'.. just post the model id code from the under-hood tag, or the trans bellhousing..

last 2 digits of '3C' ??

3 meals live 540 pto
C means 8spd

There is a line that starts with 3c and the last numbers in that line is 25.
