PTO Gear difficulty

I am having trouble getting my TS1610 PTO into 1st gear. It goes in 2nd, 3rd and 4th with very little difficulty, but 1st is nearly impossible. Does anyone have any suggestions?

As with any non-synchronized gear system, changing gears can sometimes be difficult. Try pushing the lever as normal, and when it resists going into gear, let the clutch out ever so SLOWLY to get the gears moving just a little bit - it should slide right into gear.

Will it go into gear with the engine not started? Perhaps put it in gear with the clutch in and then start the engine.......are your fluid levels ok?

Thanks, QBIRKY and Dennis for your suggestions. I tried both of your suggestions. Alas, none worked. Still can't get the dang thing into 1st PTO gear. It acts as if something somewhere is frozen. Even juiced it all up with WD40, even though I don't like to do that. I am open to any and all other suggestions. I am a little afraid to use it with a bush hog or finish mower running on 2nd, 3rd or 4th gears. Any and all help will be appreciated.
