pto engagement

I have a model 65 that I just bought, has the pto lever on the left side under the seat, lever down is ground engage, middle is netural and up is engine engage, problem is that I can`t seem to get it into the engine engage position while the tractor is running, will shift out of the engine engage position into netural, and into ground engage position, have to shut the tractor off to put it into the engine engage position, am I missing something or is there a problem?

OH, let me ask the obvious question. Are you disengaging the clutch?

I neglected to mention that yes I`am, from what I`am reading looks like the clutch needs adjusting or replaced.

thanks jj, very helpfull info, my guess at this point is the internal clutch is going to need the adjustment, I`am going to wait till it gets warmer to do anything, its 28 degrees here this morning!
