I'm working on reconditioning a JD 272 RFM. It's driveshaft has an outer metal shied. Is the shield supposed to rotate with the shaft or remain stationary and allow the shaft spin inside of it? Unless I'm missing something, I don't see anything that would keep the shield spinning along with the shaft.

Tractor PTO shields are supposed to remain stationary, held by one or two tethers, usually of very light chain. One end of each chain secures to opposite ends of PTO cover, second end of one chain is secured to the tractor, the second end of second chain is secured to the implement.

This to protect the operator by preventing any clothing from getting caught around the revolving PTO shaft, which could drag the operator into rotating shaft with lethal result.

It is easy to improvise a tether point on a plastic PTO shield. Just use a small chain "quick link" and attach it to the PTO shield with one or two cable ties.

As Jeff stated some pto shields have a tether chain especially newer styles but all pto shields that I'm acquainted with can/will rotate independent of the pto shaft. Parts keys #9 & #21 are referred to as brgs in the parts descriptions

I see that a lot on the newer plastic shielded shafts. Mine is older and the shield is steel. Even looking at the parts break down, there is no safety chain shown. I guess if something did get caught on the shield, it would stop turning and allow the shaft to spin inside of it.

I don't ever remember seeing the older steel pto covers held stationary with a chain. The plastic retainers on the steel shields acted as brgs.

Here's a picture of the shaft in question.

No chain just designed to stop spinning if contacted by body parts/clothing.
