I have a lot of small trees and brush that needs chipped. I have a Kubota B7800 and would like to get a PTO driven chipper. By the time I rent a chipper for three weekends I can almost buy a chipper. None the less, I would like to keep the cost down. Does anyone have any experience with the DR Chipper? It's light, which suggest to me that it might not hold-up.

I think that it is pretty rare to get better than what you pay for (although it isn't rare at all to get worse /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif ) so I would look for the best that I could afford.

I don't know anything about the DR pto chippers. Valby has a good reputation. With many attachments, weight is one of the things I look at, since it is one (but not the only) indicator of heavy duty - quality construction.

I run a WoodPro AVP chipper/shredder on my B7800. Iwanted both chipping and shredding capability. I bought it because of safe design and quality construction. It does a very good job on brush up to about 4-6" diam depending on whether hard or soft wood, and shredds soft vegetation well. Available through Vandermolen. Pricey but worth it.

Do a search on chipper and you will find a whole lot to read.

I and a few others have the Mackissic chipper which is light enough to manhandle around if you absolutely have to, but I sure can't imagine breaking any basic part. It's very solidly built and is also a shredder, which is important to me. 4" capacity. Anything over that and I burn it in the fireplace anyway. Northern Tool carries them.

The so called chinese chipper -- Jinma etc. -- is very polular here. It's inexpensive for it's size and power, but it's really heavy and you need to be a bit of a mechanic to get the setup right -- at least that's what I understand from reading other threads.

Anyway, do the search. It's worth your time to see what been written here.

To me the reason to own a chipper is a continuing need. If you have a one time job renting a comercial unit would be cheaper and easier. With chippers there is a spectrum of capacity the bigger they are the more they can do and the faster they work. I actually have 3 chippers. The Troybilt chipper/vac will chip up small branches and is real handy when I'm rakeing leaves in the fall. The Bearcat pto chipper/shredder will handle something like 5" branches and will knock out a tractor sized branch pile in a couple of hours. A good size rental unit will be self feeding and will probably work faster than you can. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Three weekends of work is a lot of work.

I have the DR PTO chipper and I am happy with it. It likes to eat the big stuff, but only shreds small branches and twigs. American made and comes with an extra "Knife".

Chippy chip chipin i was today
I gots me a wallenstein 6 inch PTO chippa. So far so good beats burning! Plus you get all those chips for the garden, compost, and just let em fly into the woods and build soil. A hydraulic feed would be nice but the price just aint right /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif came with an extra knife and originals are reversible. A happy addition to the implement family /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Lots of threads on this.

Got a MacKissic TPH-122 like Cliff. Sharpened the chipper blade a couple of times. Checked the hammers the other day. They've still got sharp edges; so no wear on them. I'm careful to not put stuff larger than 3/4" down the shredder chute.

Just sold my TroyBilt Tomahawk. Its hammers had been turned or replaced several times and chipper blades sharpened or replaced many times as well. Bearings were still good. Guy came to look at it and said they'd had a lot of trouble with the chipper-end bearings. Suspect one of them lodged a rock in there early in its life and didn't tell the others about it.

Had a MacKissic on my Gravely that didn't have a chipper. Got it as a package of attachments. Missed having the chipper on it. Mostly just used it for leaves.

Both MacKissics are very well balanced and quiet, MUCH quieter than the TroyBilt.

That's a darn fine piece of equipment BEFCO. What does a piece of equipment like that sell for?

BM6-800 6” 900 lbs. $7369

I found this in the Canadian "farm fleet catalogue", so probably Canadian money..

It would appear to be the same as Befco pictured
