PTO connection is very difficult

Best guard of all is common sense, don't be around behind tractor with spinning implements--shut'em down-- pto guards cause false security. A guy here in our area nearly severed his left ankle while adjusting the sway arms while his rotary mower was running, but he had a pto shaft cover. The world we live in today is full of false security. The best guard is the one we all have-- I think-- is our brain, stop ,think and then procceed!!!!

I agree on the comon sense. I was taught to stay away from a pto shaft no matter what it kind of safety features it had, kinda like a gun is always loaded.
Pto guards do work if they are installed properly and in good shape.Should you test it? Nope. Can you still get hurt on one? Yep. But they are nowhere near as unforgiving as the old bare shaft. I don't think a momentary lapse of comon sense should be a death sentence if it's avoidable. Here is an example; suppose a person is grinding feed with a feed grinder that has the controls within a few feet of the pto shaft. The person is just finnishing up adding supplements and it's getting ready to rain. The person is gathering up empty bags and going for the controls when the family dog decides to get caught up in the legs of the person causing the person to fall towards the pto shaft getting close enough that their arm falls onto the spinning pto shaft. Because the pto had a guard the person gets to learn not to ever be in a hurry around equipment and to keep the area free of clutter and just maybe tie the $%&*# dog up.
Oh and the parents dont' get to attend a closed casket funeral, much less come home and find something like that.
