PTO Chipper

I have a Ford 3930 and am wondering if it can power a PTO chipper without wearing out some critical component.
Would I be better off buying a separate chipper? I plan to use it to chop trees that we clear for mulch.

What's a reasonable price range for a used one?

We recently bought a factory refurbished Bestco PTO chipper after looking at used chippers for more $. Initially I used it on my 52 hp tractor with good results and my neighbor friend has been working it non stop for a month now on his 3038E JD. It is well made (heavy duty enough) with a 4 blade 80# flywheel.

With 45 pto hp, your Ford 3930 can power just about any wood chipper in the 8"x10" size. That's the way I would go. Woodland Mills makes one worth looking at.

I run a jinma 8" with 32 pto HP . I run it at 1800rpm. Works great. It was cheap on eBay.

The ford 3930 is around 52 pto hp so you have lots of options for 3pt chippers. you have enough hp to run a 6-10" chipper. Over 10" and you are pushing it if feeding large stuff. Used pto chippers are hard to find and in my neck of the woods they are darned close to the price of new. Reasonable price for used is subjective to condition, location, and personal opinion. I like to start at 50% of new, then go down from there, but I am cheap and have been on the hunt for a pto chipper for a few years.

A larger chipper lets you chip more stuff with limbs attached as they take up considerable room in the throat of the chipper. I have a 40 pto hp tractor and think a 8" with hydraulic feed would be perfect for it.

Thanks to all of you for the well researched replies.
I have set a $3,000 limit, so I am probably looking to find a used one.
My goal is to clean up the year long shedding of the trees and build a mulch mountain for the garden.
$3,000 only buys about 6 pallets of mulch from HD.
