PTO broke?

Was bush hogging w/1500D, and and as the front dropped into a hole, the brush hog hit a hidden stump. Tractor went bang, hog stopped turning, and lever for the PTO speed became free moving. What did I break?

Look at the mower and find out why the shear pin/clutch didn't work also, or it will probably happen again.

this would be my question as well, also were you running direct drive-line to the PTO without a overrun clutch?
I have read here on TBN someone else had broke their PTO output shaft, this would be the best scenario, although by you sugesting the PTO lever has no action then I'd say worst case scenario (broken gears)

I had an over run on it, and it self destructed. I can spin the shaft and the mower and output shaft move/roll. I didn't try it, but it running, but the lever will go into the 3rd position, just not 1 or 2
